The History of 'Bunga Tanjung'
Since 1905, the 9-petal 'Bunga Tanjung' has been one of the key ornaments in the architectural designs of the Selangor royal palace by Almarhum DYMM Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah. Unlike any normal ‘Bunga Tanjung’, the extremely rare 9-petal flower is associated with elegance, sophistication and grace while giving a very distinct smell of its own.
In 1987, DYMM Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj decreed that the 9-petal 'Bunga Tanjung' to become the official flower of the state of Selangor - sealing its identity as a symbol of Selangor's palace and nobility as the local gem of the world ever since. The 'Perbadanan Adat Melayu Dan Warisan Negeri Selangor' (PADAT) poured efforts in patenting the 9-petal 'Bunga Tanjung' to represent all the nine districts of Selangor in 2016. The initiative was undertaken so that this symbolic motif could be amplified through various crafts including fabrics and textiles in shaping Selangor's identity. Sprouting from the soil of Selangor, Royal Tanjung is picking up the torch to shine the spotlight on 'Bunga Tanjung' and its identity for the world to acknowledge
